Government-controlled, permit-only, patient-specific supply.

Schedule 8 substances may not be acquired by anyone other than the Director-General, subject to subsection (9), for the purpose of providing a medical practitioner with the substance for a specific, named patient, under conditions the Director-General sets. Subject to that same permit system, the Director-General may also authorise a medical practitioner, analyst, researcher or veterinarian to acquire or use it, for treatment or prevention in a particular patient, or for education, analysis or research.

Who may supply

The Director-General, to provide to a medical practitioner treating a particular patient, on conditions the Director-General determines; or, under the same permit system, a medical practitioner, analyst, researcher or veterinarian the Director-General has authorised, for treatment or prevention in a particular patient, or for education, analysis or research.

Prescription: No ordinary prescription applies; only a permit issued by the Director-General allows it.

Labelling: Where it is ever sold under permit, reg 10(1) requires the immediate container's label to state several particulars, including, under 10(1)(a), the letter S and the number 8 in a square border immediately before the product's brand name.
